For the ones that don't fit the box

I want you to imagine a box.

The box contains the top 20% of companies that the U.S. business brokerage industry serves. They have:

  • Clean books
  • Predictable revenue streams
  • A management team that can run it all
  • An owner who really doesn't have to be there if they don't want to

If you own a business that fits in that box, congrats and well done!

If you don't fit into the box, you're probably SOL when the ride ends, and your business will wither or shut down one day.

Think about the marketing agency where the owner is the head salesperson, or the landscaping company where the revenue is verifiable, but the books are messy because the owner has been maximizing for tax reduction.

Day after day, these businesses quietly disappear from the American economy.
When they visit with a broker, as they contemplate selling, the answer is:
"Come back when you've got it all cleaned up. Good luck."

In fact, there are multiple paths for every owner, should they choose to go down them:

  1. LOVE IT: Sometimes the path out of the box is falling back in love with the company by fixing the things that have been keeping you from running it for another 10 years, because now it actually runs without you.
  2. LIST IT: Sometimes the path is to sell it on your timeline through a process built for businesses exactly like yours, not the industry's.

Both of those count as ARRIVING in my book.
