What Madden taught me about overcoming slumps

Hey friend-

My son Landon and I play an eight-minute game of Madden most nights.

Neither of us is a huge gamer. We just started doing it about nine months ago, and it stuck. It's an awesome way to end the day together that we both look forward to.

I've been on a losing streak for about a week. It seems like every time I find something that works, he counters it.

I don't like to lose for weeks at a time, so last night I decided to come up with a new plan. I asked Claude what I might be doing wrong.

It told me I was playing scared:

I was so focused on not losing that I'd stopped doing the things that win games. I was playing not to lose rather than to win.

Last night I won.

I see business owners do the same thing all the time.
Especially the ones who are two or three years away from a sale. They've worked too long and too hard to mess it up, so they lock up. They stop hiring, investing, and taking the chances that made the company successful.

It feels like the smart move. It isn't.

Playing scared is just a slower way to lose the game.

Play to win next week.
