Earlier this week, I promoted a challenge, and now I’ve got something for your weekend.

It’s a concept I teach in the Love Your Company Again Challenge called the 30/30/30/10 Rule:

When you try something new a lot of it won't work out.

You’ll get lucky roughly a third of the time.

A third you’ll have to tweak.

A third you’ll throw in the trash.

Then there’s that last little piece of 10% serendipity.

The reason I love this rule is that it’s really about expectation setting.

Most of the time when we set out to do something new, we walk in with a story written in our heads about how it’s going to materialize. Reality always shows up when we start executing, and the story shifts. We have to be open to the fact that our plans probably won't work out exactly as we intend.

When we leave our expectations open to changes based on data, we can ease much of our suffering.

This doesn't apply just to entrepreneurial ventures!

I believe this applies to many things that are new and unknown. We get to experiment, accept feedback, and tune things along the journey.

That’s all I want to give you this weekend.

If you have something new on your plate, walk in anticipating the 30/30/30/10:

• A third to work as planned
• A third needs tuning
• A third needs to be trashed
• A small surprise to teach you something you didn’t want to hear.

You’ll be a lot less frustrated when reality shows up with its own plan.
