Analog Thoughts

Be careful what you yearn for (or Don gets a new watch) - Clarkston News

I’m the kind of person who likes to keep track of things, almost to an extreme. I’ve always believed that what you measure, you can control.

Five years ago I bought an Apple Watch because I wanted to be more present. On family trips to Western Kansas, I figured I could wear a Dick Tracy watch and leave my phone behind. At first, that’s what happened.

Over time, as someone who cares about health, I came to rely more and more on Apple’s Fitness reports and the information and trends they offer.

Next thing you know, I also had a WHOOP band and then a Pullsato to help with my nerves and sleep at night. Then the WHOOP band broke, and I switched to an Oura Ring to track my sleep.

And something happened…I overdid it.

I began obsessing over my sleep score. I would wake up right away to check it and then let that number, created by a company I don’t know, decide how I felt about my day.

I recently stopped tracking it all and put the devices in a drawer.

We were going on a family trip to Colorado and I decided to run an experiment to see how I felt.

Two weeks later, all the devices are still in the drawer.

I’m greatly enjoying not having so many tech companies track everything I do.

I’m enjoying my analog watch collection again.

I’m enjoying the presence it’s bringing to my life.

Guess what else is happening?

My health is improving, and not because a computer screen told me. Because I can feel it.

I can feel it.

I saw a post from a friend talking about generative AI and what it’s doing to art, and I responded “Hey, keep making art.”

I’m bullish on ART.

I’m bullish on HUMANS.

I’m bullish on ANALOG.

I don’t think anyone has it all figured out, but I know that analog and being human matter more than ever, and I’m focusing on the places where the two intersect.

Kind of funny since I’m sending this on my computer.

It’s the world we live in.

Have an amazing day,

P.S. I’m running a challenge for business owners who feel stuck. This will be the third time we've done this challenge.

It lasts 35 days. You can see some comments from the first and second times we did it. If you feel stuck, this may be for you.

P.P.S Andy Warhol said this about art: "It's what you can get away with."

I love that.

What are you getting away with right now? hit reply and let me know
